Frequent questions

Frequently asked questions about student exchange

What is student exchange?
The student exchange allows undergraduate students, regularly enrolled at the University of Piura, to carry out part of their studies at another university during a school period. The respective Faculty of the university of origin must previously guarantee that the student will be granted full academic recognition of the studies completed at the destination university, as part of the study plan of their own degree.
What can I study during the exchange?
UDEP students who go on exchange can take regular and elective courses in their degree. It is your responsibility as a student to previously review the course offerings of the chosen destination university. Upon your return, you must validate the subjects that you took abroad and that you included in your study plan format, with prior approval from your Faculty.
How do I know which is the best university for me?
Only you know what your personal and academic preferences and concerns are, therefore, it is you who must determine which is the best university for you. To do this you must check the website of each university. There you will find information about the courses taught, the geographical location of the university, its history, its strengths and prestige, its lines of research, etc. By searching the Internet you can find practical information about the city where each university is located, the characteristics of the country, its people, etc. In strictly academic terms, it is essential that you talk to your advisor and your professors to ask for information about which universities are best for your career. You can also talk to UDEP students who have already done an exchange.
If I go to a foreign-speaking university, do I have to take a language proficiency exam?
Before applying you should check the website of the chosen university (language requirements) what is the required level of the language, since the language certificate must be presented along with the nomination.
What expenses should I assume?
The expenses that you must assume to carry out your exchange are basically air tickets, international medical insurance, visa, accommodation and maintenance during the study period. We recommend that you evaluate the budget you have before deciding which country and/or university to apply to. The advantage of obtaining a place at a foreign university that has an exchange agreement signed with UDEP is that you continue paying your tuition and academic fees at UDEP, under the same scale.
Are there scholarships to cover the expenses required by the exchange?
There are some scholarship programs to finance the expenses required by an exchange, such as the Student and Academic Mobility Platform of the Pacific Alliance (Mexico, Colombia, Chile, Peru), the “Emerging Leaders in the Americas” Program (Canada) and the Santander Foundation scholarship. There is also the option of requesting an educational credit or loan through PRONABEC or the Leo Rowe Fund of the OAS (USA).
What if the university I choose is not on the agreement list?
You can take courses, but since there is no exchange agreement, you must carry out your studies as a “free mover” or “free student”, in which case you must make the corresponding payments for registration and academic fees at the destination university. In addition, you must inform the academic secretary of the faculty and upon return pay the credits that you will validate.
Can I apply for an exchange more than once?
Yes. At most, during the entire undergraduate period, you can participate in an exchange program for 2 academic semesters as long as they are not consecutive.
How do I get accommodation?
Once the admission process has been completed, the destination university provides you with a list of recommended accommodations that you should contact. The International Relations office of the chosen university will provide you with advice and recommend various types of accommodation, but they cannot guarantee housing. You have several alternatives such as rooms in student residences, family houses, shared apartments, etc.
How do I validate the credits?

At the end of the exchange you must send the person in charge of the Outgoing international mobility office in Udep,

  • The report of your exchange experience
  • The validation application
  • The study certificate issued by the foreign university.
  • Attach the proposed study plan with the approval of the director of studies.

It is important to verify that the validated courses appear in the SIGA before starting the next semester.

My exchange starts in September/October, how do I pay my tuition and fees and what happens if the academic load proposed in my study plan changes?
Tuition payment is made on the normal dates established in the UDEP schedule. Students who begin their academic year after August may submit a letter to the Pensions Office, with the approval of their parents and/or guardians, to request a special pension payment schedule, in installments starting from the month in which who begin their studies abroad.

If for any reason the academic load changes, it must be approved by the program director at UDEP. If you have already paid installment 1 or 2, you must notify the Pensions Office to perform a recalculation based on the next installment.

What is the cost of making an exchange?

Carrying out the exchange involves the following expenses:

  • Payment of tuition and monthly fees at UDEP during the semester of study abroad.
  • Airfare (round trip).
  • Health insurance (must be valid for the entire period of stay abroad).
  • Student visa (mandatory document required to enter a foreign country). It is requested at the respective embassy and has a cost that differs depending on the country.
  • Accommodation, food, transportation and extras (usually between 700 to 1000 dollars per month, depending on the country and city).

Testimonials

Kevin Goicochea Martínez, IC

Piura Campus. University of La Sabana, Bogotá - Colombia, 2019- II

YesI always wanted to be able to go study in another country, and when the opportunity arose I did not hesitate andn take advantage of it. What I experienced in Colombia, at the University of La Sabana, was a very enriching experience in every aspect, since I was able to meet different types of people with different customs with whom I shared unforgettable anecdotes and achieved very strong bonds of friendship. In addition, I improved significantly academically thanks to the demands of the university. I grew a lot in general, horizons that I didn't know opened up to me, and now I feel much more prepared to be able to face both the professional and personal challenges that life throws at me.

Gloria Chumán Alvarado, IME

Piura Campus. Politecnico di Milano, Milan – Italy, 2019-II.

At the Polytechnic, although the teaching methodologies are different from ours, all the professors have a very good level and explain things quite clearly, which I was very excited about. The courses I chose were master's courses, since these are the ones taught in English, and I noticed that there was a good balance between class hours, exercises and laboratories; In general, the classes went well and the engineers were always at our disposal to resolve any questions that might arise.

I stayed in San Donato, which is a city a little far from the center of Milan, but it is well connected thanks to the metro, which made it easier for me to go to the activities carried out by the ESN and to be a constant in the volleyball games organized by the polytechnic. Finally, what I liked most about Milan is that there were churches everywhere and it was easy to go to one, even if I had a full day of classes.

Sebastián Rosas Jhussey, IIS

Lima Campus. University of Wisconsin Platteville - United States, 2019-II.

At the University of Wisconsin-Platteville you receive a good amount of responsibilities, where punctuality is essential or else you lose points. The teachers I had were very good and experts in what they taught. In the end, I received an A (highest grade) in all 4 courses I applied for.

In general, I liked the education. It has an interesting level of demand, which becomes an affordable challenge.

The facilities throughout the campus were generally of very high quality. There were plenty of spaces for different things. There are also various activities and clubs to keep you entertained. They have facilities to do all sports; Personally, I used the gym and pool quite a bit.

Suzetty Paredes Campos, AQ

Piura Campus. Universidade Paulista, Sao Paolo-Brazil, 2019-II.

My academic experience was really satisfactory since as an architecture student I was very interested in knowing architectural places that I had as a reference in the theoretical part, and during the exchange that I did at the Paulista University I was able to achieve it thanks to the technical visits that were organized by the university. On the other hand, I managed to overcome the challenge I had since choosing the University, which was to learn the Portuguese language, since my classes were given in that language.

I really liked UNIP because they had a flexible schedule for students and this was partly because most students worked in their free time; That is why I managed to interact with some colleagues who already had work experience and it helped me a lot to share knowledge with them.

Angel Laguna Oviedo, AD

Lima Campus. University of Navarra, Pamplona- Spain, 2019-II.

A positive and innovative experience. The methodology was the most notable change. The teachers there teach the class in general guidelines and generally one has to go to the book and/or consultations with the teacher to go deeper into the topic or solve exercises.
The offer of workshops and clubs is wide, they hold fairs to present their projects and recruit interested parties, likewise, they are all advertised through social networks.

Students on their own initiative create clubs in various areas (research, marketing, investments, dance, etc.). They present a project with their activity plan for the year and this allows them to compete for financing granted by the same university so that the club can carry it out. The main criterion is that it generates a greater positive impact on students and society. It seems to me to be a good option that can be replicated.

Catherine Field Alegría, ADS

Lima Campus. Miguel Hernández University of Elche, Alicante – Spain, 2019-II.

During my exchange the classes were a different experience since they were with people from a different culture, and the methodologies were also different. The Miguel Hernández University of Elche has very good facilities, it is very spacious and beautiful. The teachers are quite considerate of the students who come on exchange. I really liked that some of the courses I took used technological tools in the class. I had to change a subject when I was there and the university made the change very quickly, gave me recommendations, and was always available to me for any requests. I learned to be a more responsible and independent person, being more aware of all the decisions I made.

María José Corrales Vera, EC

Lima Campus. University of British Columbia, Vancouver- Canada, 2019-II.

In the semester in Vancouver, I had an integrally enriching experience, I learned more about the importance of community and the preservation of the environment and diversity. The methodology was quite good: classes, periodic assignments and two weeks of exams. It gave enough time to organize, study or do homework ahead of time, and also get involved in a thousand and one activities.
There were several clubs, such as one for exchange students and one for self-defense. There were many recreational activities, sports (such as hiking), integration of exchange students and the courses were very interesting. Connecting with people from different backgrounds helped me value mine as well.

Melissa Parodi Gómez, CO

Piura Campus. Austral University, Buenos Aires- Argentina, 2019-I.

Carrying out the exchange had a great impact on my personal development because it allowed me to have greater independence, it allowed me to learn different ways of thinking and meet many people from different places who taught me about their cultures, which led me to understand that around the world There is a lot of diversity that is worth knowing. Furthermore, Buenos Aires is a very beautiful city, where there are many places to visit and you can do many activities to experience the culture of the place up close.

Each of the experiences I went through on the exchange are unforgettable.

Alvaro Gastañaduí Gonza, DE

Lima Campus. Sapienza University of Rome-Italy, 2019-II.

Being on an exchange in Italy has been, without a doubt, one of the best experiences of my life. It allowed me to insert myself into an extremely enriching academic space, in which I was able to delve deeper into the topics and courses that interested me most in my career; This thanks to the experience and knowledge of the teachers that I was able to meet. But not only that, it has also given me a space for cultural exchange and comprehensive learning necessary to better face the challenges of a globalized society like today's.

Francesca Medina Aguilar, HGC

Piura Campus. International University of Catalonia, Barcelona-Spain, 2018-II

My exchange was enriching and definitely unforgettable, as it greatly expanded my horizons and perspectives, both in the History and Cultural Management degree, and in life. Thanks to this experience, I was able to meet many wonderful people from different places. The International University of Catalonia stands out for its academic excellence and its wonderful university community and the city of Barcelona, for its great cultural and historical wealth. It is a very orderly city with a fast and efficient transportation system.

Ajendra Li Quevedo, PS

Lima Campus, Maastricht University, Eindhoven-Holland, 2019-II.

Maastricht University is a very demanding university that uses the “Problem Based Learning” process. I took five courses, divided into three periods. This methodology greatly benefits the student without neglecting the academic demands that characterize this university. I was able to concentrate exclusively on the courses that I had each period, increasing my concentration and motivation towards classes. Thanks to this organization, I have had a significant improvement in my academic performance and I was able to make better use of my study time and free time to do other activities..

The experience has helped me a lot to learn to take care of myself, be much more responsible, and learn to take care of myself.

Martina Gildemeister Franco, ED

Piura Campus. University of Los Andes, Santiago-Chile. 2018-II.

I did my exchange at the Universidad de los Andes in Santiago de Chile, where I took three courses and had the experience of doing pre-professional internships which allowed me to compare first-hand the educational reality of the country with ours. I have been able to enjoy a very implemented and pleasant library to study which I have sought to make the most of. Studying at the university led me to meet teachers who were very willing to help me both in class and outside, today I can even call them friends. I consider Santiago to be a very orderly and pleasant city to live in, my experience there has been positive all around, I have met incredible people, mainly the other exchange colleagues, who have become great friends and we went there like brothers. The surroundings and the other cities of Chile are very beautiful and wonderful to visit, a variety of landscapes in a very short time with a lot of contrast. Definitely the experience of doing an exchange is super enriching both professionally and personally.

Alejandra Campos Lam, COM

Piura Campus. CEU Cardenal Herrera, Valencia-Spain, 2018-II.

The teaching at CEU was more practical than theory, I felt that I learned a lot by doing, putting into practice what I read in the offprints. Valencia is a pretty friendly place, I managed to get situated super quickly and made good friendships that will last a lifetime. The exchange made me leave my comfort zone, it made me a better person, more responsible and understanding of what happens abroad.
